"I see beauty in the things that are minimal but avant-garde, deep but subtle. The nostalgic and melancholic, but full of angst--contradicting but by bits and pieces they are different, and will always be mysterious. That I think is what make things beautiful."
-Martina Marie Manalo
(quoted from an interview of the students from the University of the Philippines, Diliman)
Martina is a self-taught visual artist, a professional ballet dancer, writer/editor of an online dance magazine and co-founder and marketer of an international independent art magazine called, Magazine 43.
Coming from a family of artists, she is the youngest of three siblings. Manalo began dancing at the age of three, and continued on until the age of twenty-five dancing as a company artist and faculty in one of the most prolific ballet companies in the Philippines.
She started teaching at the age of fifteen and was a working student at the time. Alongside her teaching, Manalo was also dancing for a local dance company and a journalist student at the University of Santo Tomas, Philippines. In 2012, she discovered a different kind of love and passion for painting wherein she has done a couple of exhibitions in and out of the Philippines. Three years after, she flew to Hong Kong to work in the happiest place on Earth---Disneyland. She then discovered and explored the world of photography and since then has been invited to different universities in the Philippines to talk about fine art, and photography.
At present, Martina continues to teach dance to kids and adults in Hong Kong while also working as a writer and editor for a local dance magazine.
Not so long ago, in the Spring of 2017 she has co-founded an international and independent art magazine with one of her brothers called, Magazine 43. Aside from running the magazine, Martina also works as a marketer for Magazine 43.
